The 2008 Edition of NFPA 25 Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems require obstruction investigation and testing for microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) if internal inspection of a particular sprinkler system reveals any of a number of conditions that may indicate internal corrosion:
Paragraph 14.2.1.2 of NFPA 25 states:
"Tubercules or slime, if found, shall be tested for indications of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC)"

Paragraph 14.2.1.2 of NFPA 25 furthermore states:
"An obstruction investigation shall be conducted for system or yard main piping whenever any of the following conditions exist:
(13) Pinhole leaks"
